Understanding the Experience of a Vet Visit
Sometimes recovery takes longer than expected...

In earlier posts, I detailed an unfortunate incident where I accidentally injured my cat while trying to groom him with scissors, leading to a wound that required veterinary attention:
- The Scissors Incident: My attempts to manage my cat's fur resulted in a mishap that could have been avoided.
- Apologizing to My Cat: In the aftermath, I focused on making amends and providing comfort.
When we visited the vet, he assured us that our beloved cat would likely be on the mend in about twelve days, at which point the staples could be removed.
The Cone of Shame
During this time, my cat had to wear a cone to prevent him from licking his wound, and he was kept indoors to avoid further complications. To adapt, we created a “safe room” for him, allowing us to keep the patio doors open during the sweltering heatwave. Watching him struggle with the cone, especially as he longed to go outside, was heartbreaking. His companion cat, usually a close friend, became hesitant around him and often ran away during playtime.
A Challenging Situation
It was tough to see my cat confined and uncomfortable, but surprisingly, he remained remarkably resilient. He forgave me immediately and sought out my company, which only deepened our bond. I felt grateful for his understanding nature.
Feelings of Guilt
Despite his forgiving demeanor, guilt lingered in my heart. He didn't deserve this ordeal, and I counted down the days until his follow-up appointment. I would sing to him, echoing the lyrics of "One More Day" from Les Misérables, as I hoped for a speedy recovery.
The Day of Reckoning
Finally, the day of the follow-up appointment arrived. I carefully placed him in his carrier and took a taxi to the vet. Thankfully, we were seen early due to some rambunctious dogs in the waiting area. After examining the wound, the vet noted some residual healing was needed and decided to add a few more staples.
Extending the Cone's Duration
Feeling a wave of frustration on behalf of my cat, I was disheartened to learn that our timeline had changed. The vet advised that the cone would have to stay on for an additional six days. I left the clinic feeling defeated but relieved that it was better than facing a more serious situation.
Finding Comfort in Each Other
Throughout those remaining days, my cat was always happy to see me. He seemed to understand that I was the source of his discomfort but chose to forgive me. I focused on the positives—six days were manageable compared to the alternative. I continued singing my song, and he purred in response.
Reinforcing Our Bond
As I lovingly scratched behind his ears, our connection deepened. In a moment of clarity, I decided to dispose of the scissors that had caused so much trouble. My cat looked at me, and I promised, “Never again, boy. Never again.” His purring reassured me that our bond remained strong.
