Chapter 1: Introduction to DALL-E 2
I recently received an exhilarating email from OpenAI: I was granted access to the closed beta of DALL-E 2 after two months of waiting!
What Exactly is DALL-E 2?
If you're already familiar with it, feel free to skip ahead. For those new to the concept, here’s a brief overview. DALL-E 2 is an AI application developed by OpenAI that generates images based on text descriptions. It was revealed on January 5, 2021, and operates using a sophisticated 12-billion parameter version of the GPT-3 transformer model, allowing it to convert natural language inputs into vivid images.
A Quick Tour of the Web App
The interface of DALL-E 2 is straightforward and user-friendly. You simply enter a text prompt and click the Generate button. Additionally, there’s a “Surprise Me” option that auto-generates random prompts. The app also allows users to upload images for the AI to create variations.
My Experience Generating Images
After entering a brief description of my desired image, I clicked the Generate button. The results were ready in under a minute, as shown below.

I was absolutely amazed! The results were remarkably original and far exceeded my artistic capabilities.

This made me ponder the possibilities of collaborating with AI for vector illustrations. You could easily import these images into Adobe Illustrator, adjust them, and use them for various projects like web articles or presentations.

The level of detail, particularly in how the AI captures light and shadow, is truly impressive. DALL-E 2 often exceeds my expectations.

While the results can be quirky, this technology does have some limitations. Without proper safety measures, it can potentially generate inappropriate or harmful content. OpenAI is actively addressing these concerns with its Content Policy and a gradual rollout process, currently allowing access to only 1,000 new users weekly.
Upon logging into the web app for the first time, I was met with essential reminders regarding responsible usage.
For the record, I have not attempted to generate images that violate the terms of service.
Chapter 2: Reflecting on the Potential of DALL-E 2
The creative possibilities with DALL-E 2 are virtually limitless. You could describe scenes from your favorite novels, and the AI would generate corresponding visuals. Alternatively, you might describe a novel invention, and the AI would create an image of it.
However, DALL-E 2 is not infallible; at times, the images produced may not align with your expectations. For artists who are meticulous about detail and accuracy, DALL-E may not always deliver.
Nonetheless, DALL-E 2 is an extraordinary AI tool set to transform how we create and perceive visuals. I am excited to continue using it in my future projects!
