Creating an Effective Writing Routine in Just Three Steps

Written on

Chapter 1: Understanding the Writing Process

Writing is a fascinating endeavor; it can be both immensely gratifying and remarkably challenging. Many writers tend to sit down at their desks or grab a pen only when inspiration strikes. However, if you limited your writing to those moments of motivation, how frequently would you actually write? Personally, I would manage to write perhaps once or twice a week. In contrast, I currently produce two posts every day. The difference is substantial. So, how do I maintain such a prolific output?

The answer lies in my writing routine. It's straightforward, well-defined, and crucially, it works. Here’s how I successfully published 135 articles in just over two months on Medium.

Setting Aside Dedicated Time

You need to carve out specific time slots for writing—be it right after breakfast or post-work hours. By doing this, writing transforms from a task you might skip if you lack motivation to a scheduled activity that you simply do. I find that my most productive writing occurs just before bedtime, which I believe has actually enhanced my sleep. Putting my thoughts onto paper before closing my laptop is an effective way to quiet my mind. Plus, it can be a bit exhausting, which helps me wind down.

To create your writing schedule, determine the average time it takes you to write an article. Multiply that by the number of posts you wish to produce daily, and allocate that amount of time for writing. Simple, right? Well, perhaps not easy, but definitely straightforward. After a week of following this routine, it will start to feel natural.

Finding Your Ideal Writing Environment

Each writer is unique; for instance, I enjoy listening to music while I work. Others may require absolute silence. I have even composed an article while on a phone call, which some might find impossible. It’s essential to discover what enhances your focus. Will you have music playing in the background? Or perhaps a favorite drink to keep you refreshed during those intense writing sessions?

One crucial tip is to maintain a tidy workspace. There's nothing worse than trying to concentrate while surrounded by clutter, like empty snack bags strewn about your desk.

Knowing Your Writing Goals

I’ve discussed this method in a previous article titled:

How To Write A Bucketload Of Blogs

I managed to write 50 blogs in just 31 days, and here’s a quick overview of the process:

You need to have a clear idea of what you will write before you sit down to work. While motivation can sometimes guide you, that’s not always the case. This is where having a plan becomes invaluable. Outline five potential topics, complete with images, titles, and subtitles. Write three of those posts, and then brainstorm another five ideas. Continue this cycle to keep a reservoir of ideas at your disposal when you’re ready to write.
