Exploring Logseq: A Competitive Note-Taking Solution
Written on
Chapter 1: Introduction to Logseq
Logseq is often touted as a strong contender in the world of note-taking applications, especially when compared to well-known options like Obsidian. I encountered this intriguing software quite unexpectedly—thanks to a timely recommendation from Google. After reading a compelling article (which I can no longer locate), I was intrigued enough to visit Logseq's website. The features offered caught my attention, prompting me to evaluate Logseq alongside Obsidian and Notion.
Before we delve deeper, let’s examine the key feature highlighted on their website: “A privacy-first, open-source knowledge base.” This suggests that our data is stored locally and there’s a free version available.
Availability
Logseq is compatible with macOS (both Intel and Apple Silicon) and Windows 10. However, there’s currently no mobile version—though one is reportedly in development. The limited support across platforms is somewhat offset by Logseq’s appealing pricing structure.
Pricing
Logseq offers a plethora of offline features at no cost for both personal and commercial users. Users face no restrictions on block quantity, making it feasible to cultivate a digital garden with this application.
While donations are welcomed to support Logseq's development, they offer various tiers. A standard donation doesn’t yield any special perks, while the “Backers” tier at $5 per month provides access to beta builds, such as the anticipated mobile app, along with special badges. Higher tiers, ranging from Bronze to Gold Sponsors (priced at $100, $250, and $500 per month respectively), offer visibility on Logseq’s GitHub and website.
This pricing model emphasizes a more philosophical choice rather than a transactional one, which I find refreshing—there are no hidden costs, and $5 is a reasonable ask for the benefits provided.
Features and Visuals
Upon launching Logseq, users are greeted by a tri-column layout. The left column contains an array of navigation tools, including open folders, notes, and shortcuts to features such as graph view and flashcards.
The central column showcases the main note-taking interface, allowing users to jot down thoughts and format them using markdown. This interactive layout closely resembles that of Roam Research.
Notably, users can create flashcards seamlessly by tagging a note with #card, followed by indentation for answers. Logseq even supports a "cloze" feature for hiding crucial keywords, enhancing the flashcard functionality.
Furthermore, Logseq's graph view feature allows users to visualize interconnected notes, greatly aiding in content organization and idea generation. For those who require synchronization, creating a note folder in any cloud storage service—such as Google Drive or Dropbox—is straightforward, ensuring access across multiple devices.
Chapter 2: Video Insights
In this section, we explore some insightful video content that discusses Logseq's capabilities and compares it to other note-taking tools.
The first video, titled "Logseq: Rating Notes Apps (out of 100)", provides a detailed review of Logseq and its features, highlighting its strengths and weaknesses.
The second video, "The BEST Notetaking Apps Ranked", offers a broader comparison of various note-taking applications, including Logseq, giving viewers a comprehensive understanding of how it stands against its competitors.
Conclusion
Logseq presents a robust option for note-taking, boasting a feature-rich environment that can rival established applications like Obsidian. However, given my current integration of Obsidian into my daily research and writing routine for my Ph.D., I plan to stick with it for now.
Have you tried Logseq, or do you have a preferred note-taking application? I welcome your thoughts in the comments.
