Finding Serenity in Shadows: The Icelandic Concept of Skumaskot

Understanding Skumaskot
This week's exploration takes us to the lesser-known realm of Iceland, a northern island with a modest population of only a few hundred thousand. Renowned for its geysers, volcanoes, and unpredictable weather, Iceland boasts a fascinating culture. I am certain that a visit there would inspire a wealth of new ideas, expressions, and writings.
The Icelandic term "Skumaskot" translates to a preference for darkness. It embodies the notion of relishing solitude in dimly lit spaces rather than seeking the company of others in bright surroundings.
Why do we gravitate towards shadows?
Let's begin with introspection and ask ourselves key questions. Regardless of whether we are extroverted or introverted, there are moments when we shy away from the spotlight. What triggers these moments?
These instances often arise when we feel vulnerable or hurt, when we wish to keep our struggles private, or when we find solace in the unpredictability of our own inner world. Although our personal realms may be chaotic or uncomfortable, they belong to us, and that is what truly matters.
In the absence of external scrutiny, we can breathe deeply and allow our spirits to unwind in the comforting embrace of darkness, free from distractions. Moreover, solitude in the shadows provides a cloak of invisibility, shielding our innermost desires and allowing us to explore them without fear. In the obscurity of darkness, even our own reflections may seem distant, providing a safe space to confront our emotions and aspirations.
The purity of darkness is unmatched; it serves as a sanctuary where our truths can emerge without interference. It is essential to reveal our authentic selves regularly and within such a nurturing environment.
We are beings of both light and shadow. At first glance, we may appear as vibrant, colorful figures; however, when we turn inward, we may uncover deep scars and hidden pains. In our quest to navigate a world dominated by appearances, we often seek refuge in isolation. This retreat into our own shadows offers a chance to rejuvenate our weary souls from the constant demands of visibility.
While society often encourages us to remain in the light to avoid being labeled as recluses, shadows exist for a reason. They serve as our private sanctuaries, where we can mend our wounds as we go about our daily lives. Like injured animals tending to their own wounds, we find healing in the quiet corners of our existence.
It is important to remember that while darkness shouldn't be our permanent dwelling, neither should we completely shy away from it when it serves a purpose. The vital concept here is balance.
As a final note, I want to highlight the film The Perks of Being a Wallflower. Initially, I watched it for Emma Watson, who has captivated me since her portrayal of Hermione in Harry Potter. However, I found the film compelling in its portrayal of individuals who, for various reasons, prefer to dwell in the shadows.
Bright days may invite us outdoors, but on occasions when we feel drawn to the dark, this film might offer the comfort we seek.
Wishing you a wonderful weekend!
Until next week,
— Gulsun
