After years of wishing to attend, I finally experienced this literary festival, set in Britain’s only designated 'book town'. Despite my short stay of just a week, I returned home enriched with an abundance of inspiration. Here are five key takeaways that may resonate with creators from all backgrounds.

The Unifying Power of Writing

From the moment I stepped into the festival, I felt the unmistakable aura of middle-class culture surrounding me. The prices for coffee and lunch were steep, and attending a single talk could set you back £15, making it inaccessible for many. Yet, there lies an irony in this, as a compelling narrative or insightful nonfiction has the potential to transcend societal barriers.

Amidst an audience of predominantly older, affluent attendees, I realized the true essence of literature: its ability to connect diverse individuals. While the literary world may seem exclusive, the beauty of storytelling fosters a shared experience—a collective passion for reading. This was evident as strangers gathered, united by their admiration for particular authors or themes being explored.

Words have a remarkable ability to bridge divides. They bring people together, fostering connections and shared understanding. We must strive to safeguard and support this invaluable gift.

Embracing Healthy Debate

The Hay Festival is not solely a celebration of fiction; it also delves into pressing contemporary issues. This year, discussions centered around topics like the risks of AI, climate change, and Britain’s colonial history. These discussions can be contentious but are vital for progress.

One particularly memorable session addressed the evolution of the National Trust in Britain, highlighting its need for accessibility and a critical examination of its estates, many of which were funded by the slave trade.
