Raman turned towards home, mindful of completing his evening rituals before darkness fell. At sixty, he retained a youthful appearance, with only a few strands of gray disrupting his otherwise peaceful visage. Occasional rays from the setting sun glimmered off his round spectacles.

His home was just a short walk away, along a path lined with coconut trees. Once inside, he engaged in his time-honored rituals, feeling the weight of a culture steeped in millennia. The chants he recited resonated with the deep history of a civilization that flourished along the banks of the Sarasvati and Ganges rivers.

The Lone Path: A Journey of Focus

After a quiet dinner, Raman stepped into the courtyard for his nightly stroll—a practice he cherished for years. This was more than mere idleness; his mind was absorbed in the recitation of Lalitasahasranamani¹, the thousand names of the Goddess Lalita.

As night fell, a blanket of stars illuminated the sky, while the harmonious sound of crickets filled the tranquil air.

With eyes closed, Raman's thoughts drifted back to a significant moment from his past. He recalled a sunny afternoon spent explaining the four states of consciousness to a student.

"The waking state, the dream state, the deep sleep state, and the transcendental state," he explained. Just as he finished, a voice chimed in, "Now, tell her about the supra transcendental state." This moment marked the inception of his solitary journey.

The Turning Point: Beginning the Lone Path

Turning around, Raman saw a man dressed in white with dark, attentive eyes, who greeted him with a respectful "Namaste." This encounter was forever etched in his memory, filling his heart with joy. He recalled the saying: when the disciple is ready, the Guru appears. This marked a pivotal moment in his life—an encounter with his Guru that set him on the path he had long been searching for.

In the following weeks, he reflected on the beginning of a remarkable journey, entering a tradition that had roots extending back over five millennia. This was the solitary path of a specific sect of Hindus, where one traverses various paths before arriving at the ultimate one.

As the crickets serenaded the night, a profound silence blanketed the earth.

Raman's thoughts wandered to the day of a significant event. After completing his morning rituals, numerous disciples and visitors gathered to commemorate Vijayadasami, a day steeped in tradition. On this day, young children are introduced to the world of writing—a ceremony rich in significance.

Participating in the essential havan (fire sacrifice), Raman awaited a moment that would change his life. After several minutes, he was called forth. Following another ablution, he engaged in lengthy rituals, culminating in the life-altering moment when he received a new name from his Guru. He was finally initiated into the final stage of his spiritual journey, becoming a revered member of an ancient Tantric school—living proof of a tradition that spanned thousands of years.

Days later, as he boarded a bus, Raman reflected, "I am embarking on a new journey. I no longer need to seek other paths. This is where the lone path truly begins."
