Navigating the Complexities of Building a New Desktop PC
Written on
Chapter 1: My Current Setup and Its Limitations
I assembled my current desktop back in 2014, which feels like a lifetime in the tech world. The total cost for all the components was about $2,500. At that time, my finances were in good shape, so spending that amount was manageable.
For the past eight years, my system has performed admirably, thanks largely to the 16 GB of DDR3 RAM overclocked to 2400MHz, which has allowed me to run everything I need without a hitch. However, since starting my YouTube journey and installing DaVinci Resolve for video editing, the performance has been less than ideal if I try to multitask.
Despite my efforts to save frequently, I’ve encountered significant limitations. The main bottleneck is my processor—an outdated Intel i5 4420 with only four cores and no hyperthreading. Even the best chip available for my socket would struggle to meet my needs.
I am at a crossroads: I need a new computer that can handle live streaming and other resource-intensive tasks.
Section 1.1: Mac vs. PC Dilemma
The only reason I considered switching to a Mac was due to the outrageous prices of graphics cards. It’s hard to believe that a 3060ti is going for around $600, and the 3070 is even pricier. The 3090 is practically the cost of a used car!
I looked at options like the Apple Studio and Mac Mini, knowing that their M1 chip is excellent for video editing. However, if I can't run the latest games while streaming, then investing in a new computer would be pointless.
Section 1.2: Prebuilt vs. DIY
Having spent a decade in IT, I enjoy building computers and do it frequently. Yet, I'm now considering a prebuilt system because graphics card manufacturers often sell to system builders at locked-in prices. Interestingly, the cost of GPUs is similar whether you buy them individually or as part of a prebuilt system.
However, the lack of customization in prebuilt options means I might not be able to configure it to my exact needs, and the savings are minimal.
Chapter 2: California’s Energy Regulations and Their Impact
In 2022, California and several other states prohibited the sale of non-compliant energy-efficient computers. This has made it nearly impossible to find older processors at a reasonable price, especially since they are now abundant in states where they can be sold.
Consequently, refurbished computers must feature one of the last two generations of Intel or AMD chips, leaving me with limited choices.
Section 2.1: Choosing Between AMD and Intel
When considering new hardware, RAM plays a significant role. An Intel setup with the latest i5 and an X570 motherboard can support DDR5, which offers a slightly lower performance compared to the Ryzen 5, but at a starting clock speed of 5200MHz.
You might think that an Intel system is the way to go, but hold on. Intel consumes 95 watts, while the Ryzen 5 only uses 65 watts, making it a smarter choice for long-term usage, especially since I plan to run it under load for long hours.
Section 2.2: Time to Purchase
I started my shopping journey on Newegg and utilized their system builder, ensuring only California-compliant items were displayed. After hours of trial and error, I finally settled on a build that cost around $1,900, which included a Ryzen 5, 32 GB of DDR4 3600 RAM, a 650 Watt PSU, and an Nvidia 3060 with 12 GB of RAM.
Now, it was time to tackle the financial side of things.
Chapter 3: Credit Challenges
To my dismay, I was only approved for a mere $50 credit line. My credit score, a dismal 560, reflects a history that I’d rather forget. I genuinely don’t recall half of the debts that contributed to this score.
Section 3.1: What’s Next?
Without the graphics card, my total comes to around $1,300. I have an Nvidia 960 with 4 GB of GDDR5 in my current setup that I can use temporarily. Ideally, I wanted to buy everything at once, but financial constraints have forced me to rethink my plan.
I’m not looking for handouts, but I could use some advice. Does anyone have suggestions on how I can expedite this process? Please keep in mind that I reside in California, where many deals cannot be shipped.
