Chapter 1: A Musical Journey

Recently, while driving on the highway to conduct a workshop for elementary music teachers, I found myself reminiscing about the past. I planned to introduce the piece "Aquarium" by Saint-Saëns during the session.

In a moment of nostalgia, I asked, “Hey Siri, play 'Aquarium' by Saint-Saëns.” To my surprise, Siri responded with, “Sure! Here’s 'Oye Cómo Va' by Santana.”

Although it wasn’t what I requested, I couldn’t help but enjoy the groove of Santana’s tune. It transported me back to my childhood, recalling the green transistor radio I used to listen to. As I sang along, “Oye cómo va….da da dah bueno bottle pop!” I realized how far I’ve come, now knowing the Spanish lyrics after living in South Texas for several years.

“Oye cómo va mi ritmo bueno pa’ gozar,” I belted out joyfully, only to glance at my speedometer and see I was cruising at 80 mph. Whoops! I quickly reined it in, focusing back on the road.

Once the song wrapped up, I asked Siri to play it again. “If you insist,” she replied, before diving into the lyrics of "If I Only Had a Brain."

Suddenly, a phone call interrupted my sing-along. It was the teacher who had hired me. “Are you alright?” she asked, sounding concerned. “Yeah, I’m just a mile away,” I reassured her. “I thought you’d be here early to set up,” she replied. “Traffic was rough,” I explained.

Upon arriving, I faced a bit of confusion trying to follow the entry instructions, despite my familiarity with both languages.

Between my 65-year-old brain and Siri’s occasional mix-ups, I find comfort in knowing that future generations will navigate this high-tech landscape with ease.
