Understanding the Fear of Tweeting
Is anyone else apprehensive about sharing thoughts on Twitter regarding the invasion of Ukraine? The power of a tweet can be both insignificant and monumental.

Hello, I’m known as “Lost on Purpose” (not my real name — surprise!). As a Millennial, I admit that Twitter makes me nervous. I often refer to myself as a “geriatric Millennial” because I belong to the “Mark Zuckerberg generation”— I was in college when Facebook made its debut. I distinctly remember it being called “The Facebook” and needing a university email for registration. In contrast, platforms like Snapchat and TikTok often leave me puzzled and somewhat intimidated.
In essence, I straddle two worlds: one foot firmly in the social media camp and the other in “That sounds intriguing, but I don’t quite grasp its purpose.” My social media journey has been quite selective. I primarily engaged with Facebook throughout my twenties and then shifted to Instagram and Facebook in my early thirties. The pandemic has prompted me to strive for a more “responsibly active” presence online.
What does this mean? It’s about contributing thoughtfully to discussions on social media and other platforms I deem significant, aiming to add genuine value.
Embracing Twitter's Real-Time Nature
I’ve had a Twitter account for some time but wasn't actively engaged. Recently, I created a “Lost on Purpose” handle specifically to share my articles and interact with fellow writers (feel free to follow!). Over the past few months, I’ve been attempting to embrace Twitter as a real-time conversation hub. However, this transition has been challenging and has presented a steep learning curve. I’m making an effort to check in regularly, especially to engage with others. I’ve started to enjoy reading tweets from fellow writers and have even begun commenting and retweeting when I feel inspired, but I often struggle to contribute meaningful dialogue.
This brings me to the ongoing crisis in Ukraine. First and foremost, this is not intended as a political analysis. Regardless of your views on the situation, this discussion focuses on how to engage meaningfully on Twitter. Like many, I’m deeply concerned about the ramifications of Russia’s invasion as a global power. Additionally, I have a personal connection to the region, having volunteered in Moldova—Ukraine’s southern neighbor—during Russia’s annexation of Crimea nearly a decade ago.
