Chapter 1: Early Missteps in Cybersecurity
In 2006, Cal Leeming, then just 19, faced conviction for utilizing over 10,000 stolen identities to acquire goods worth £750,000. Serving a 15-month sentence, his journey into the world of hacking began at the tender age of 11. In a 2016 interview, he reflected, “I was convicted of ‘causing a computer to perform a function with intent to secure unauthorized access,’ under The Computer Misuse Act (1990), when I was just 12. I still hold the title of the UK’s youngest convicted hacker.”
Leeming’s insights into his criminal past, the rehabilitation process, and his views on the current government stance towards young hackers are compelling. He remarked that a significant factor in his re-offending was a “lack of guidance and mentorship.”
Section 1.1: The Downward Spiral of Crime
Leeming shared, “Many individuals attempted to assist me, but my surroundings hindered my recovery.” Growing up, he faced numerous hurdles, including a single mother struggling with substance abuse. To support his family, he resorted to using stolen cards to buy groceries. “I possessed a skill,” he recalled, “which allowed me to alleviate some of our financial struggles.”
But how did a simple act of ordering food escalate into more severe criminal activities? He explained, “The individuals I associated with and the crimes I committed escalated significantly. I began hacking into various ISPs and companies to obtain data. I was pirating PlayStation games, music, and movies; essentially everything I couldn’t afford.”
He further elaborated on how his actions became increasingly reckless: “I eventually found myself ordering items worth a thousand pounds, delivered straight to my home. My downfall came from carelessness; I left a trail of evidence because I became complacent. Honestly, I think I wanted to be caught.”
Leeming’s co-defendant, who was also his girlfriend, faced arrest, which added pressure on him. “With limited options, I had to do the right thing.”
Section 1.2: Life Behind Bars
While incarcerated, Leeming struggled with the absence of technology. “It was tough,” he admitted. “The monotony was excruciating. I vividly remember the countless hours spent staring at my cell wall.” He noted, “There were no fellow hackers among the inmates. Some would inquire about my past, but their interest was superficial.”
A notable aspect of his story is the unique bond he formed with Officer Clive Read, the officer responsible for his arrest. Leeming expressed gratitude, stating, “He played a pivotal role in my rehabilitation. After my release, he introduced me to a bank and provided a reference for my first job in London. Several other individuals also recognized my potential and were willing to give me a chance.”
Chapter 2: Reflections on Youth Justice
Leeming’s reflections on the youth justice system raise important questions. “I got fortunate,” he stated. “The officer in my case genuinely cared about the community.” He voiced concerns about the treatment of young offenders today, asserting, “Children are now being criminalized for mere curiosity.”
He criticized the current approach of the National Crime Agency (NCA), noting, “The government claims to prioritize rehabilitation, yet the statistics tell a different story. Schools often report students to the police for hacking instead of fostering an environment of mentorship.”
Leeming argues for a shift in perspective. “Scaring youth away from hacking will not be effective for most. Instead of punishing them, we should focus on education.” While some advocate for severe measures against juvenile hackers, he believes that rehabilitation is far more beneficial for society and the individuals involved.
His journey serves as a testament to the power of second chances, demonstrating that with the right guidance, former offenders can contribute positively to society.
