Have you ever taken a moment to reflect on your internal dialogue? Our minds are constantly processing thoughts, and it's all too easy to overlook the messages we are repeating to ourselves. If you find yourself feeling stagnant, it’s likely that your thoughts are trapped in a repetitive cycle.
During a flight to New York City last year, I experienced a situation that highlighted this concept. About 30 minutes into the journey, the pilot informed us that due to weather and traffic at LaGuardia Airport, we would need to remain in a holding pattern. Initially, this wasn’t much of a concern for me since I had my phone and Wi-Fi access.
However, as the plane continued to circle after the fourth or fifth time, my patience began to wear thin. By the seventh round, I was eager to disembark. This experience served as a poignant reminder of how frustrating it can be to be stuck in a loop.
If you neglect your self-talk—an influential factor in shaping your mental patterns—you risk remaining in that stagnant phase indefinitely.
The "Someday" Syndrome
A common mental trap many individuals fall into is the "someday" mindset. They often think, “One day I will find a better job,” or “One day I will pursue my dreams.” However, that notion of someday can easily stretch into an infinite timeline if you don’t take proactive steps.
Consider this: if you were already the person you aspire to be, would you still speak and act the way you do now?
If your answer is no, it's time to reframe your self-talk.
Instead of saying, “One day I will…” start affirming, “I am currently…” and take actionable steps toward that goal.
Stop making excuses and fixating on hurdles, such as needing help from others or financial limitations. Shift your focus to your ideal self and the new opportunities that arise as you pursue your passions.
Remember, the language you use shapes your reality. The more you articulate your aspirations, the closer you move toward manifesting them.
