Beat the Summer Cold: Tips to Stay Healthy and Happy

Understanding the Summer Cold

Hello, fellow sufferers! Dean Benson here, and today we’re diving into a topic that can truly ruin your summer—summer colds. Nothing can spoil your outdoor fun like feeling under the weather when you should be out enjoying the sun. I’m currently grappling with one myself, which began as a bout of allergies and has escalated into a full-blown cold. (Thank goodness it’s not the infamous “Vid-o-rific”!) Let’s explore why these summer colds can be so unpleasant and how to swiftly get rid of them.

Why Summer Colds Are Especially Unpleasant

Heat and Humidity: The combination of heat and humidity amplifies discomfort. Dealing with congestion and fever is tough when you’re already sweating profusely. Even in places like Phoenix, AZ, where humidity levels are low, it can still feel quite oppressive.

Disrupted Plans: Missing out on summer BBQs, pool parties, and beach outings due to a cold can be incredibly frustrating. It can leave you feeling isolated and miserable.

Allergy Confusion: Summer allergies can mimic cold symptoms, making it difficult to determine the cause of your discomfort. This confusion can lead to trying ineffective remedies and prolonging your suffering. (Sound familiar? That’s definitely what I’m experiencing.)

Effective Remedies for Summer Colds

Stay Hydrated: It’s essential to consume plenty of water, herbal teas, and clear broths. Staying hydrated helps thin mucus, making it easier to clear out and relieving that blocked sensation.

Get Plenty of Rest: Your body needs ample rest to combat the cold. Prioritize sleep and take naps whenever possible. Rest is your ally during this time. (Ah, naps—once avoided, now desperately sought!)

Cool Mist Humidifier: Using a cool mist humidifier adds moisture to the air, which can soothe your nasal passages and ease congestion, particularly in air-conditioned environments.

Saline Nasal Spray: This can help clear nasal passages and reduce congestion without medication. I’ve found that regular decongestants do little for me unless it’s allergy-related, and they may have made my symptoms worse.

Over-the-Counter Medications: Decongestants, antihistamines, and pain relievers can alleviate symptoms. Just remember to follow the instructions and consult a healthcare professional if you’re uncertain. I’ve been relying on Vick's Day Care and NyQuil—one for daytime and the other for night—to manage my symptoms.

Gargle with Salt Water: For a sore throat, gargling with warm salt water can provide significant relief. Mix half a teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water and gargle a few times daily. It might be unappealing, but it can be effective.

Honey and Lemon: Combine a tablespoon of honey with the juice of half a lemon in warm water for a comforting drink. Honey has antibacterial properties, while lemon provides a boost of vitamin C. This concoction always helps soothe my throat, which is crucial for me.

Stay Cool: Keep your body temperature regulated by taking cool showers and applying damp, cool washcloths to your forehead and neck. Steer clear of heavy, spicy foods that could raise your body temperature—no ghost peppers or spicy Southwest cuisine for me!

Boost Your Immune System: Incorporate fruits and vegetables rich in vitamins and antioxidants into your diet. Foods high in vitamin C, like oranges, strawberries, and bell peppers, can help enhance your immune response. I typically take 1000 mg of vitamin C daily, but this time I think I may have started too late to prevent the illness.

Prevent Spreading the Virus: Maintain good hygiene by washing your hands regularly, covering your mouth when coughing or sneezing, and keeping your distance from others while contagious. If possible, stay home!

Final Thoughts

A summer cold can be quite bothersome, but with proper care and remedies, you can recover and return to enjoying all your summertime activities. Listen to your body, rest, and take care of yourself. Stay hydrated and cool, and you’ll be back to enjoying life in no time!

Wishing you a speedy recovery, and here’s to a vibrant, healthy summer ahead!
