# Embracing Setbacks: The Path to Persistent Progress

Chapter 1: The Nature of Progress
Reflecting on my experiences at the seaside in August, I contemplated the concept of progress and how it can sometimes feel stagnant or even regressive.
During my visit to Towyn beach in Wales, I observed individuals who seem to effortlessly maintain their focus, whether working on projects, writing, or pursuing fitness goals. In contrast, my journey has become more challenging as I’ve aged, facing:
- Reduced energy levels
- Increased demands on my time from others
- Heightened self-doubt regarding my pursuits
As a result, my progress fluctuates; at times, it even feels like I'm going backward. My stats on Medium serve as a prime example of this inconsistency.
While at the beach, I watched the waves roll in and noticed how they constantly shift direction.
“Nothing groundbreaking there!” you might think.
However, envision someone unfamiliar with the ocean. A quick glance might lead them to believe the waves only oscillate back and forth, making no real progress. Yet, these waves persist until they reach either high or low tide, demonstrating a relentless pursuit of their journey.
Chapter 2: Learning from Nature
Another enlightening moment came from an article I encountered in the 1980s while studying Practical Electronics.
The piece described a battery charger circuit designed for non-rechargeable batteries—definitely not a DIY project!
The article detailed a process known as periodic current reversal, where the current through the batteries was alternated multiple times per second. This approach allowed the batteries to charge, briefly discharge, and then charge again—similar to the rhythm of the tides.
While there are technical explanations for its effectiveness, the key takeaway is that persistence ultimately leads to success.
Section 2.1: Personal Application
In my own life, several situations resonate with this message:
- Weight Loss: I aim to shed a few pounds, but I occasionally indulge in treats, causing temporary weight gain. If I were to give up entirely, I’d never reach my goal. So, I stay mindful of my eating habits on most days.
- Decluttering: After organizing my living room, I brought in numerous boxes from elsewhere, making the space feel even messier. However, once I sort through them, I will be closer to my desired outcome.
- Medium Writing: There are days when I intend to publish a story but fall short of completion. Even so, I continue striving to engage with more articles, despite my fluctuating statistics.
Final Thoughts
It’s easy to assume that those who succeed do so without encountering hurdles. In reality, a significant factor in their achievements is their ability to focus on the journey rather than dwell on setbacks.
They persist and continue moving forward.
Thank you for taking the time to read this reflection!
