Embracing Simplicity: Lessons from a Grandfather's Wisdom
Written on
Chapter 1: The Little Red House
Perched atop a hill, the small red house offered more than just shelter; it brimmed with the stories of my grandfather. Even now, I can almost hear the laughter echoing from its walls. His mantra was clear: "less is more." He eschewed modern conveniences, opting for a radio and, later, a wall-connected phone. A passionate reader and a steward of the land, he cultivated a garden and tended to his sheep and goats. It was only as an adult that I recognized the Little Red House as my sanctuary.
In my youth, I often complained about boredom. "Why are we reading? I'd prefer to play video games," I would lament. He would reply, "Reading lets you explore the only true realm there is—your mind. Many chase wealth and fame for fulfillment, but what you truly need is gratitude, diligence, kindness, and imagination. Happiness comes from within; grasp that early, and your life will flourish," he would wink.
My summers were spent by his side, soaking in stories, assisting him in the garden, and learning the art of animal husbandry. Sundays were for community—attending church and enjoying lunch at the old café, followed by chess matches with his best friend. They would reminisce about their youth, reminding me to respect nature and understand its wisdom.
My grandfather lived nearly a century, never once allowing illness to define him. He relied on nature for healing, crafting tinctures and herbal oils that he consumed daily. His philosophy on health emphasized moderation: fast occasionally, consume earth's bounty, and enjoy lean meats. He believed movement was essential, advocating for daily walks and quiet reflection as the best remedies for restlessness. "Listening to your true self is essential," he would say.
As I reflect on my grandfather's teachings, I realize how much I miss our conversations. He was attentive and engaged, a rarity in today's world where many are glued to their screens rather than connecting with those beside them. In a society where processed foods prevail and physical activity dwindles, we find ourselves grappling with obesity and illness, often unaware of the choices we make.
Inspired by my grandfather's lifestyle, I am adopting a simpler way of living. I limit my television time, immerse myself in books, practice intermittent fasting, and strive to nourish myself from the land. I share this wisdom with my son, echoing my grandfather's words when he claims boredom: "You're not bored; you're simply learning to be with yourself."
This narrative stems from a fundamental truth: simplicity is key. I don't crave the latest gadgets, social media validation, or hollow praise. What I seek is self-awareness, authentic relationships, and a life grounded in balance rather than excess. I cherish moments of contemplation free from distractions, gaining insights from literature, and grounding myself in nature's embrace. Embracing these principles has made happiness more attainable, as it springs from within rather than from external sources.
