Exploring My Journey to a Vegetarian Lifestyle

Chapter 1: Introduction to Vegetarianism
In this discussion, I want to share my experiences with a vegetarian diet, emphasizing that this is not a debate about which dietary choice is superior. Each of us has unique backgrounds shaped by diverse cultures and regional foods.
Initially, I adopted a vegan diet, but I struggled with portion sizes and often felt hungry, resulting in significant weight loss. Over time, I've learned how to balance my caloric intake effectively.
From my perspective, being a vegetarian is quite manageable. Asian cuisine typically includes a variety of rice, vegetables, and fruits. Particularly, Chinese and Indian cuisines offer numerous vegetarian dishes, likely influenced by cultural and religious practices.
Section 1.1: Vegetarian Delights
In our region, we also have an array of mock meat options. For instance, a popular dish is Chinese vegetarian "chicken" rice, which, while flavorful and paired with spicy chili, can be high in calories—definitely not the healthiest choice.
On a daily basis, mixed vegetable rice is a common meal choice. It's affordable and tasty, costing around SGD$6.20 (approximately USD$4.60).
Occasionally, I indulge in a vegan or vegetarian burger, which usually consists of a soy patty piled high with vegetables and condiments. However, vegan options are often pricey here; a meal can easily reach SGD$20 (around USD$15), making it a rare treat for me.
Indian cuisine ranks among my favorites, offering a plethora of vegetarian meal choices and various chutneys, not to mention the delightful naan.
Section 1.2: Traveling and Vegetarian Options
When I travel, particularly to Thailand once or twice a year for a brief getaway, I find vegetarian food readily available and economical. This could be attributed to Thailand’s predominant Buddhist culture, where plant-based options are easily accessible, whether at street vendors or in shopping malls.
There are also dedicated vegan restaurants, which, while a bit pricier, offer delicious meals worth trying—especially while on vacation.
Chapter 2: Health Considerations
Despite the benefits, my journey hasn't been without challenges. I've been monitoring my health closely to avoid nutritional deficiencies. Recently, I began taking vitamin B12 supplements and incorporated eggs into my diet.

In conclusion, there is no perfect diet. The key is to strive for a healthy and active lifestyle: eat in moderation, engage in regular exercise, and ensure adequate rest. Prioritize whole foods, especially fruits and vegetables, and stay hydrated!
