Finding Quality in a Busy Life: Simple Tips for Improvement

Embracing Change Amidst Chaos
As I took a break from my previous article titled "Spoiled? No, … try DEPRIVED!", I found myself reflecting on the multitude of thoughts that were still swirling in my mind. My eagerness to publish often leads me to rush, which can shortchange both my readers and myself.
With that in mind, I want to share some straightforward strategies for busy parents—whether single or partnered, working or at home—to cultivate mindfulness in their lives, enhance the quality of family time and meals, and prioritize self-care.
It might seem daunting just to read that paragraph! So, let's tackle this in manageable steps. It's crucial to understand that we all start from different places, influenced by various factors. My goal is to offer suggestions that are beneficial no matter where you find yourself on your journey.
This could even evolve into a series—if I can carve out the time! Life can feel overwhelmingly full, which is why practical tips like those in this article can help.
Utilizing Canned Foods Wisely
First off, it's perfectly fine to incorporate canned foods into your diet—just remember to check the labels. I'm talking about nutritious canned items, not just “meals in a can.” While I frequently use canned beans, I’ve attempted making my own, and while it’s feasible, it can be quite tedious. Thankfully, there are quality canned options available, especially those low in sodium or with sea salt.
I also keep canned artichokes and tomatoes handy. While I’ve made artichokes from scratch, I prefer the convenience of canned varieties without excessive spices and salt. Fresh tomatoes are my usual go-to, but having canned ones in stock is convenient.
One day, I hope to learn canning myself, but like many of you, it's not a skill I possess, and it can be quite time-consuming to learn. I prefer to keep whole foods in cans rather than pre-prepared meals, although I might have a can of soup on standby.
Some other examples of items I keep include:
- Coconut cream
- Jackfruit
- Corn
- Watercress
- Bamboo shoots
- Tomato sauce (not a whole food, but handy)
Of course, I aim for organic options whenever possible. According to Dr. Michael Greger, a trusted source of mine, canned whole foods maintain a decent level of nutrition, especially beans. However, it's essential to be cautious about additional ingredients, like syrup in many canned fruits.
Adding Positive Changes
One of my favorite methods for improving my routine is to focus on adding rather than subtracting. Influential figures like Dr. Michael Greger, Joshua Rosenthal of the Institute of Integrative Nutrition, and Dr. Andrew Weil advocate for this approach.
Instead of stressing over what to eliminate from your diet or lifestyle, start by incorporating positive changes. Drink more water throughout the day, enjoy a fresh apple or orange as a snack, or take a brief walk around the office. Set aside 3–5 minutes for playtime with your kids, pets, or even just for yourself.
Adding new habits doesn’t need to be overwhelming. For instance, simply stepping away from your desk to take three deep breaths can take less than 90 seconds.
Remember that small, gradual steps still contribute to your journey toward improvement. Each positive choice accumulates over time, leading to significant changes. Like the fable of the Tortoise and the Hare, consistent, steady progress will help you reach your goals.
You are the architect of your life! Pursue your aspirations without feeling the need to apologize for your journey. Striving for happiness and health is a worthy endeavor, and I wholeheartedly support you in this pursuit.
I hope to share more tips to assist you on your path. Until then, take care, and know that I’m cheering for you!
