Free Yourself from Others' Opinions: One Question Transformed My Life

Chapter 1: Breaking Free from External Judgments
Many individuals hold back their potential due to the opinions of others, but this mindset can be detrimental.
Three years ago, I embarked on my first journey with a life coach, feeling stagnant and as if I were simply keeping my head above water. To "tread water" means to maintain your position without making any significant progress, and that perfectly described my situation.
During our conversation, a realization dawned on me: my primary obstacle was my fear of what others thought of me. This fear was preventing me from truly living my life. It was a profound awakening!
In our initial session, I found myself in tears. By the second session, I was still emotional but starting to see hope. By our final meeting, I was smiling.
Why the transformation? Because I finally grasped the significance of a single question:
So what?
It sounds straightforward, doesn’t it? Allow me to elaborate on the meaning behind these two simple words.
Imagine you’re eager to create YouTube content but are paralyzed by the thought of your coworkers judging you. I completely relate to that fear.
Now, envision this: you muster the courage to upload your first video, and your colleagues actually take a look at it. Ask yourself—speak it out loud, not just in your mind—"So what?"
What’s the worst that could happen if they watch and dislike it? Will they confront you, saying, "I saw your video, and it was awful! Please stop making them!"? Highly unlikely.
Honestly consider this: what’s more regrettable? Pursuing what you love, experimenting, and learning in the process, or remaining trapped in a monotonous routine, yearning for the courage to step outside your comfort zone?
Picture yourself later in life, reflecting on your experiences. What will you regret more: not pursuing your passions due to others’ opinions, or taking the leap, even if it wasn’t flawless?
There’s a humorous saying in Hungary:
"I respectfully ask those who spent their lives worrying about 'what will the villagers say?', what did they ultimately say?"
This highlights our tendency to fret over trivial matters instead of taking meaningful action, which is truly unfortunate. In the end, the only question that matters is: Did you pursue what brought you joy and fulfillment?
