Chapter 1: Reflecting on the Past

How often do we find ourselves wishing the present was different? As we reflect on our lives, we often regret the choices we made along the way. While heartbreaks, setbacks, and failures have shaped who I am today, there are key pieces of advice I would share with my younger self.

Dear Alex,

It's the year 2022, and life has offered both highs and lows. You are a remarkable and compassionate individual, but there are a few things you could do to support your future self, and I would be immensely grateful.

Don’t trim your beautiful long hair. Trust me, you’ll be regretting that decision shortly after.

Do you remember the camera Mom gifted you? Keep using it, but even more importantly, chase a career in photography. It’s a delightful hobby that can be costly, but you’ll grow to love it even more, and it could also become a source of extra income.

Heed Mrs. Spelling's counsel. She encouraged you to continue writing because she appreciates the stories you craft during class assignments. Don’t question her; just follow her advice!

Continue sketching and painting, as these skills will serve you well in future endeavors. Stop doubting your talent.

Consider adopting a vegan lifestyle; eliminating meat, dairy, and eggs will alleviate your gastrointestinal struggles. The mass production of certain foods and unethical practices are harming the environment and the animals you cherish. You’ll feel both physically and emotionally better.

Cherish the time spent with Uncle Manuel. He knows how much you care for him, almost like a father figure. You’ll be traveling for an extended period and won’t see him for a while. If you feel compelled to call him just days before his birthday, don’t hesitate—reach out!

Hold onto your guitar and keyboard. Your passion for music is undeniable. Keep attending classes and strive to master those instruments. And don’t forget to get a drum set; you’ll love it as well.

Extend your stay in Europe; there are countless trails and sights you’ve yet to explore. Capture those moments with your camera!

You may not excel at surfing, but don’t give up! Keep practicing! Your love for the ocean makes it enjoyable.

Learn to establish boundaries. People value your company because they know you will respect their secrets. However, some may expect you to tolerate their behavior without limits. While your desire to help others is commendable, prioritize your own emotional health. It’s perfectly acceptable to assist them, but don’t let their issues become your burdens.

Trust your instincts; they will guide you rightly.

Understand that not all friendships are meant to endure. When a relationship ends, avoid dwelling on it too long. Treasure the beautiful moments, but learn to let go. Everything happens for a reason.

Don’t apologize for being assertive or standing firm in your beliefs. Those who genuinely care for you will embrace you as you are. Remember, your assertiveness will be one of your greatest strengths.

Above all, never lose faith in your ability to achieve your goals. In challenging times, remind yourself that solutions always exist.

You will continue to make mistakes, regardless of how much wisdom I, your future self, share with you.

When you stumble, rise up, brush yourself off, learn from the experience, and move forward. The journey of learning is lifelong.

Despite the challenges, life is truly beautiful!
