Living in Alaska: Navigating with Auto Pilot

Chapter 1: The Journey Begins
Some days present more challenges than others. Last night, while braving the chilly winds and ocean spray, I yearned for the cozy refuge of the Bridge.
This morning, I engaged the Auto Pilot for the initial hour, charting a course at 148 degrees southeast. I marveled at the sun rising over the mountains, while in the distance, our first turn awaited—a 5-degree adjustment to port.
The Auto Pilot was disengaged since it doesn’t comprehend rudder adjustments. It’s important to note that Auto Pilot differs significantly from an AI-driven vehicle. Current technology hasn't yet reached a cost-effective level for mariners, but perhaps one day it will.
Auto Pilot simply maintains a straight course until instructed otherwise. In earlier times, this involved propping a sturdy stick against a wooden wheel, but those days are long gone. Now, the Auto Pilot operates based on gyroscopic data, though I still believe I can do a better job.
I keep an eye on the gyro indicator as it tracks our heading, timing the computer's adjustments. Then, I take over manually to see if I can outpace it. Result: Human 1, Auto Pilot 0. It's comforting to know I'm not yet obsolete, though realistically, I can’t help but calculate the timeline until that day arrives. It’s not a comforting thought.
In Alaska, modern technology is gradually becoming more prevalent. Smartphones, fiber optics, satellite communication, and Auto Pilot are all part of this evolution. While the pace of technological adoption is slower here compared to other regions, we are still in America.
Starlink has made its presence known, but it hasn’t fully dominated the landscape yet. Once we gain access to 5G at sea, the dynamics will shift dramatically. My projections regarding human obsolescence grow increasingly concerning with each passing day. Reporting from the Sitka Narrows, Alaska, where Auto Pilot assists my navigation.

Chapter 2: The Impact of Connectivity
In this chapter, we explore how connectivity will reshape the maritime landscape. With the advent of faster internet and improved communication technologies, the way we navigate and connect with others at sea will change forever.
