Introduction to Sony's MiniLED Strategy
Sony is set to enhance its 4K LED/LCD television lineup with the introduction of MiniLED backlighting in its new X95K model. Although these TVs may come with a higher price tag, they are anticipated to significantly outperform previous models like the X95J and X95H.
During CES 2022, while the spotlight was largely on Sony's first QD-OLED TVs, the company's foray into MiniLED technology is equally noteworthy. This advancement will cater to consumers seeking a television that delivers vibrant brightness in various lighting conditions, unlike OLED/QD-OLED TVs, which excel in darker settings. This strategic move could have a considerable impact on Sony and the premium television market overall.
Sony's Delay and Commitment to Quality
At a pre-CES presentation, it became evident why Sony had hesitated to launch MiniLED-based TVs in 2021. The company wanted to perfect its local dimming algorithm to optimize the performance of MiniLED arrays. Known for its leadership in image processing, Sony has consistently demonstrated that it can produce high-quality displays with minimal zones. The company has now refined its algorithm to meet the demands of MiniLED technology, ensuring that its new models will provide an unprecedented level of display quality.
The Arrival of New Models
Sony's latest MiniLED models, the Z9K and X95K, are successors to the Z9J and X95J, offering 8K and 4K resolutions, respectively. The Z9K will be available in 75 and 85-inch sizes, while the X95K will also come in a 65-inch variant. Although specific details about the number of MiniLEDs or individually controllable zones have not been disclosed, they are expected to surpass the capabilities of their predecessors. For context, the Samsung 85QN900A 8K from 2021 featured over 2000 individually controllable zones, while the Sony 85X95J had around 120.
Sony aims to tackle common issues associated with LED/LCD backlighting through its improved processing algorithm, which strives to achieve near-OLED levels of control and deep blacks, while maintaining the high brightness typical of premium LED/LCD models. The true test will come when review units are released, but early indications suggest promising advancements.
Enhanced Processing and Control Features
Both the Z9K and X95K will utilize Sony's latest Cognitive Processor XR, which has been upgraded to include new features not available in the 2021 version. Importantly, the Backlight Master Drive system, which is Sony's premier backlighting control technology, will be reintroduced in these models, marking a significant evolution in display performance.
The anticipated improvements could position these televisions as leaders in the LED/LCD category for 2022, especially when compared to rival brands like Samsung and LG, who are also introducing their own MiniLED offerings this year.
More Affordable Options and New OLED Models
While the Z9K and X95K are Sony's flagship MiniLED offerings, the company is also providing a range of more budget-friendly options. The Bravia X90K will likely be the most accessible, utilizing full-array local dimming technology, while the X85 and X80 series will feature basic backlighting to keep costs lower. All models will run on the Google TV operating system and include HDMI 2.1 ports with improved audio features.
Sony is also expanding its OLED lineup for 2022, retaining the exceptional A90J and updating the A80J to the A80K, along with introducing the A90K in 42- and 48-inch sizes, which positions it as a versatile option for smaller spaces or gaming.
Introducing the Bravia Cam
In a notable addition, Sony unveiled the Bravia Cam, a webcam designed for its new TV lineup. This device will facilitate video calls and optimize settings like brightness and sound balance. It will be included with the Z9K and the QD-OLED A95K models, while remaining optional for others. This innovation could pave the way for more interactive family experiences in the living room.
