I often pondered what truly drives sustainable change in our lives. It became clear that it isn't the grand gestures or hefty investments that lead to transformation. Instead, I found that the real power lies in the small actions we consistently adopt as habits. These seemingly insignificant practices have become quiet but mighty catalysts for my personal and professional development.
Although these ten subtle routines may often be overlooked, they have collectively become the backbone of my well-being in numerous ways. I have observed the positive effects they had on those around me as well.
These ten small practices have rewritten the narrative of my daily existence, improving both my physical and mental health, elevating my happiness, and even aiding in financial savings. Here, I share a brief introduction to these remarkable habits, detailing why and how I have integrated them into my life, along with the benefits I’ve enjoyed.
1 — Mindful, Diaphragmatic, and Nose Breathing
Breathing is a natural act that we often take for granted. I used to breathe through my mouth, especially during the night, which led to sleep disturbances and fatigue. Unbeknownst to me, I was neglecting the importance of effectively oxygenating my body.
The erratic breathing patterns I adopted contributed to stress and anxiety. However, once I embraced the practice of mindful breathing through my nose and utilizing my diaphragm, I experienced a significant shift in my mood and overall health.
This beneficial habit not only calmed me by activating the parasympathetic nervous system but also enhanced my mental clarity and energy levels.
2 — Hourly Hydration Reminders
In the past, I frequently mistook thirst for hunger, which resulted in unhealthy overeating. I also suffered from regular headaches, believing they stemmed from complex issues. I later discovered that dehydration was the real culprit.
By setting an hourly reminder to drink a glass of water with a pinch of Himalayan salt, I witnessed remarkable results. My false hunger signals vanished, and my persistent headaches disappeared.
3 — Skipping Meals
Previously, I adhered to a regimen of three meals and three snacks, which negatively impacted my metabolic health, leading to weight gain and pre-diabetes.

The sun exposure increases the production of dopamine and serotonin, while also regulating melatonin and cortisol levels. This leads to an uplifted mood throughout the day and promotes improved sleep at night.
Furthermore, soaking up the sun enhances my vitamin D levels, a vital nutrient essential for overall health.

My work in technology often requires excessive screen time, which can lead to both physical and mental strain. I was also addicted to social media, which added unnecessary stress.

Chronic back pain plagued me due to prolonged sitting and poor posture. I sought relief through medication but found greater success in stretching and calisthenics.
Incorporating brief sessions of stretching and planks with a medicine ball into my office routine has greatly enhanced my core strength and posture, alleviating muscle and nerve pain.
Now, I set a reminder to stretch and plank for five minutes each hour, providing a refreshing break for my body and mind while releasing endorphins.
8 — Cold Showers and Hot Baths
I replaced my morning coffee with invigorating cold showers, successfully overcoming my caffeine dependency. A quick three-minute cold shower before challenging meetings revitalizes both my body and mind.
Alternating between cold showers and soothing hot baths in the evening has a profound influence on my hormones. The initial surge of cortisol from the cold is followed by deep relaxation.
Hot baths with Epsom salts soothe my muscles and activate the parasympathetic nervous system, making it easy to drift into a restorative sleep.
9 — Expressive Writing and Self-Conversations
Engaging in daily expressive writing and having heartfelt dialogues with myself has greatly improved my well-being.
These practices serve as a mental workout, reducing stress and anxiety, enhancing my mood, and boosting creativity and productivity. Expressive writing sharpens my writing skills and offers an emotional outlet, while self-conversations foster empathy and compassion in my interactions with others.
10 — Daily Acts of Kindness and Gratitude
Every day, I intentionally practice kindness and express gratitude for the positives in my life. These simple acts bring joy to my day and strengthen my connections with those I cherish.
I also take a moment to jot down what I’m grateful for, serving as a daily reminder of life’s blessings. This ritual infuses my routine with positivity and encourages me to focus on the brighter side of life.
