Finding True Self-Care: An Archeological Approach to Healing
Written on
Chapter 1: The Importance of Tailored Self-Care
Engaging in effective self-care requires a personalized approach that resonates with your unique self. While a soothing steam bath with hot stones might be therapeutic for one person, it may not hold the same value for another. There is no universal remedy that fits everyone’s needs.
Self-care practices, such as foot massages and steam baths, can serve as delightful distractions. Yet, the real question is whether they will guide you towards the emotional space you wish to inhabit.
In my favorite book, The Artist's Way by Julia Cameron, I encountered a thought-provoking series of questions that sparked memories and provided an avenue for healing past wounds. Awareness is the first step to recovery; if we remain oblivious to our scars, they cannot heal. I share this insight with you.
Warning:
Some reflections might elicit uncomfortable emotions, but don’t shy away from them. Feel free to skip any questions that seem particularly distressing. Approach this introspective journey like a detective on a mission, or an archaeologist equipped with a magnifying glass and a small shovel. Remember, the artifacts you discover are remnants of the past and can’t harm you; they are merely echoes of time gone by.
If you encounter feelings of fear, proceed regardless. Take inspiration from Susan Jeffers, who authored a book titled Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway.
Here's a compelling quote that may motivate you to confront your fears:
“The cave you fear to enter holds the treasure you seek.”
— Joseph Campbell
Embracing Your Emotions
It's essential to allow yourself to experience the feelings that surface during this exploration. Emotions, while significant, are transient. It is within these shadowy corners of our psyche that profound learning occurs. Jim Rohn's words may resonate with you:
“Our emotions need to be as educated as our intellect. It is important to know how to feel, how to respond, and how to let life in so that it can touch you.”
If discomfort arises, face it courageously; therein lies your potential for growth.
Chapter 2: Commencing the Archaeological Expedition
Now, let’s put pen to paper. Grab a notebook or journal and take a moment to fill in the blanks from the prompts below. This exercise is best approached with a sense of urgency, but feel free to bypass anything that feels too painful right now.
If you stumble upon something intriguing, pause and examine it closely. I found a significant insight after spending thirty minutes reflecting on one of these prompts.
- As a child, I missed the chance to _________________________.
- As a child, I lacked _____________________________.
- As a child, I could have used _________________________.
- As a child, I dreamed of being _______________________.
- As a child, I wanted a __________________________.
- In my household, we never had enough of __________________.
- As a child, I needed more __________________________.
- I regret I will never again see _______________________.
- For years, I have missed and wondered about __________________.
Note: These prompts are inspired by Julia Cameron’s insightful work, The Artist's Way.
Nurturing Old Wounds
Reflect on your responses. Is there at least one action you can take today or this week to soothe an old scar? Remember, it’s never too late to initiate rejuvenation, despite what your ego may whisper. Julia Cameron reassures us: “It is not too late, no matter what your ego tells you.”
Physician, Heal Thyself
Engage in personalized self-care. Tend to an emotional wound from the past or address lingering issues you've faced. The choice is yours.
Make your focused efforts meaningful, and enjoy the journey! Unearthing emotional artifacts can be both rewarding and fulfilling.
If you discover something particularly interesting or surprising during your introspection, I encourage you to share your findings so that we can all learn from your journey.
Good Luck and Best Wishes,
Max
