Understanding Life's Journey After 40: Embrace the Process

Chapter 1: The Pressure of Expectations
Reaching your forties can evoke a sense of urgency, making you feel as though this is your final opportunity to achieve your dreams. You may believe that if you don’t accomplish your goals within this decade, you’re doomed. It’s easy to fall into self-doubt, especially if you feel you haven’t attained certain milestones by now.
Many people grapple with feelings of inadequacy, particularly when comparing themselves to peers or facing familial pressure to succeed. However, if you’ve been working diligently and still feel unfulfilled, take a breath. What’s unfolding in your life isn’t solely your doing; it’s the universe at play.
Life Unfolds Randomly
At 34, I frequently questioned my worth because I hadn’t yet tied the knot or secured a stable job. My financial situation limited me from enjoying simple pleasures, like dining out. Despite my efforts to escape my humble beginnings, I often felt like I was hitting walls.
Having faced numerous challenges, including a perilous journey from Africa to Europe, I launched into various endeavors that ultimately didn’t pan out. After relocating to Germany in winter 2019 to pursue a media venture, I faced setbacks, including a visa denial for the U.K. My dreams seemed to slip further away.
With my plans crumbling, it was easy to label myself a failure. Yet, I learned a crucial lesson: Much of what happens in our lives is beyond our control. As Nassim Taleb notes in his work, “Fooled by Randomness,” we’re often at the mercy of life’s unpredictable nature. If you’re in your forties and struggling to see progress, remember: you’re not solely responsible for your circumstances.
Life is in Motion for You
Understanding that everything occurring in your life serves a purpose can be challenging. It took me time to grasp this concept. Upon reflection, I realized that my greatest achievements often came when I stopped chasing them. Conversely, failures typically stemmed from pursuits that weren’t aligned with my true path.
This realization underscores the idea that life unfolds for our benefit. The struggles we face are not a punishment but rather a means of growth. Each experience contributes to our journey.
The Universe’s Timing is Perfect
Reflecting on my past endeavors, I recognize that some of my dreams didn’t materialize because the timing was off. For instance, had I moved to Europe ten years earlier, I might have succumbed to harmful choices that would have altered my life irreparably.
Instead, I’ve grown and evolved in ways I couldn’t have imagined. The universe has its own schedule, and everything happens when it’s meant to.
Gratitude Over Worry
When faced with challenges, it’s easy to succumb to worry. However, worry often stems from a mindset of scarcity. In contrast, gratitude arises from an understanding of abundance. Embracing gratitude can shift your perspective and open doors you didn’t know existed.
Instead of fretting about unmet goals, focus on appreciating what you have. This shift in mindset can lead to unexpected opportunities and fulfillment.
Final Thoughts
While it can be disheartening to feel that your efforts haven’t yielded results, remember these key points: life unfolds randomly, it’s working in your favor, and the universe operates on its own timeline. As you navigate this journey, cultivate gratitude and trust that what you seek will come to you in due time.
This reflection comes from my experiences over the past 34 years, and I hope it resonates with you. Wishing you success and fulfillment in all your endeavors.
