Nostalgic Technologies: Why I Can't Let Them Go

Chapter 1: My Love for Vintage Tech
As a self-proclaimed tech enthusiast, I often find myself engrossed in discussions about high polling rates in gaming mice, low latency in displays, and the delightful sensation of optical-mechanical keyboard switches. The mere thought of these topics gets my adrenaline pumping. However, today I want to share my admiration for some older technologies that I simply can't part with. While my fascination stems from my personal interests, there's an undeniable charm in these vintage gadgets that modern life often overlooks. Here are three classic technologies that I refuse to abandon.
Manual Transmission Vehicles
In 2017, I purchased a 2016 Ford Focus RS, and it has undoubtedly become my favorite vehicle. Although my car history is relatively brief, this particular model stands out. While automatic transmissions and even electric vehicles (EVs) offer undeniable convenience, my heart still belongs to manual transmissions. The exhilarating experience of shifting gears while accelerating, or the joy of executing a perfect heel-toe downshift, is unmatched. It might not be the most practical choice for everyone, but for me, it transforms my daily commute into a thrilling race car experience.

Physical Books
I don’t often seek out physical books, usually only purchasing them when I stumble upon a used bookstore or need specific textbooks that aren’t available digitally. However, there’s something inherently enjoyable about reading a tangible book. The scent of paper and the tactile sensation of turning pages as you delve into the author’s thoughts create a unique reading experience. While eBooks offer undeniable convenience and are my usual choice, a part of me will always cherish the nostalgia of holding a paperback.
The Keyboard
If you're engaging with Medium—whether to share your thoughts or explore others'—there's a good chance you're fond of computers equipped with physical keyboards. It may sound odd, but in our increasingly globalized world, many people seem to prefer smartphones or tablets, relying solely on virtual keyboards. The pandemic might have temporarily boosted personal computing, but I believe this trend won't last. As technology evolves, many may abandon traditional computers for touch-centric devices. Yet, I remain a devoted keyboard lover and can't imagine crafting these articles without a physical keyboard. As long as I exist, I’ll have a keyboard, either connected to my laptop or tucked away in my bag, ready to pair with whatever futuristic device I acquire next.

Final Thoughts
Many older technologies hold a unique allure. Not only have they adapted to stay relevant in today’s market, but they also possess a certain “patina” that comes with age. I’d love to hear your thoughts! Is there a piece of technology—perhaps considered outdated—that you simply can’t let go of, despite the advances in modern alternatives?
