How to Successfully Publish Your Notebook on Amazon KDP

Chapter 1: Introduction to Self-Publishing Notebooks
This is your go-to resource for independently publishing notebooks on Amazon. I'll guide you through the process step-by-step, demonstrating how I create and upload my own notebooks. So grab your Canva account, and let’s dive into this straightforward and rewarding venture. The moment you hit "publish," you'll experience an immense sense of accomplishment—trust me, it's worth it!
Before we begin, I’d like to share two of my recent creations: a children’s activity book and an adult coloring book filled with affirmations. Initially, I was quite nervous, fearing the worst since this was my first experience creating such products. To my delight, they turned out beautifully, surpassing my expectations.
I've always aspired to create content for kids, even though storytelling isn’t my strong suit. One day, I stumbled upon a YouTube tutorial that inspired me to design a coloring book filled with fun facts about animals and engaging activities.
In addition, I envisioned creating an affirmation coloring book for adults, as I enjoy spending time coloring when I feel stressed. My aim was to produce a book that reminds everyone of their unique value.
Publishing on Amazon has been an enjoyable experience, though I'm still new to it and eagerly awaiting my initial orders. In the meantime, I'm busy creating even more notebooks, including password journals and dream planners, all of which are now available on Amazon.
Now, let's focus on creating blank-lined notebooks. These are incredibly simple to make, and designing the interior is a breeze.
Section 1.1: Getting Started with Canva
To kick things off, open Canva and select "Create a Design," then choose "Custom Size." Based on my research, the most common size for notebooks is 6x9 inches. So, enter a width of 6.125 inches and a height of 9.25 inches, then click "Create New Design."
Once you have your blank page, we’ll start designing the interior filled with lines. Click on “Elements” and navigate to the lines and shapes section. After selecting a straight line, ensure you leave some space at the top, just as a traditional notebook would.
Extend the line across both ends until it reaches the page's edge. Don’t worry if it slightly overlaps; it won’t matter in the end.
As you can see, the line might appear a bit too dark, so I like to adjust it. Click on the line, and in the style preferences section at the top, reduce the weight to about 2 and change the color to a light gray.
Subsection 1.1.1: Designing the Interior Pages
Next, we need to replicate the lines so the interior resembles a traditional notebook. Simply right-click the line, select "copy," and then "paste." Make sure to maintain a consistent gap between the lines. Repeat this process until the page is filled, leaving a similar gap at the bottom.
I usually aim for around 120 pages in total. With the free version of Canva, you can create up to 100 pages at once, so we’ll create 20 pages initially. Once you have the first page, duplicate it until you reach 20, then save your work as a PDF.
Continue duplicating until you reach 100 pages total, and then save again as a PDF. To merge these files into a single document, you can use a free online tool.
Now that we have our notebook interior, let’s move on to designing the cover.
Section 1.2: Crafting the Notebook Cover
Return to Canva and create a new design. The dimensions for the cover will be different. Typically, I input sizes according to Amazon's guidelines, but if they flag your design, resizing is straightforward.
For the cover, use a width of 12.7 inches and a height of 9.25 inches. Choose a background image from Canva or Creative Fabrica—ensure it's permissible for commercial use by slightly modifying the design.
To create the spine, click on “Elements,” select a shape, and resize it to fit the center of the cover. Adjust the color as desired.
To make a frame, create another smaller box inside the first one and set its color to match the background.
Now, let’s label it. I’ll simply name it “Notebook.” Adjust the transparency of the spine if needed, and add text to the spine using an Amazon KDP template.
Head to a template generator website, input the dimensions (6 inches for width, 9 inches for height, and your total page count), and download the template to use in Canva.
Place the template over your design, adjust the text to fit snugly within the lines, and remember to save it as a PDF.
Chapter 2: Uploading Your Notebook to Amazon KDP
Once you've prepared your KDP account, navigate to the Amazon Kindle Direct page and select "Add Paperback." Enter your notebook title and a brief subtitle to describe it.
Leave the edition number blank and fill in the author field with your name or pseudonym. If others helped, list their names in the contributed section; otherwise, leave it empty.
For the description, provide as much detail as possible—mention the intended use, size, color, page count, and any special features. Ensure you select that you own the publishing rights.
Next, add relevant keywords to improve your notebook's visibility. Conduct keyword research to find terms that potential buyers might search for.
After entering your keywords, choose the appropriate category, typically nonfiction. If you don’t have an ISBN, select the option for a free one. Leave the publication date blank, as the review time is uncertain.
Now, select your desired settings, opting for a black and white interior. You can choose between a matte or glossy finish.
Upload your notebook manuscript and cover, ensuring your cover does not include a barcode. Sometimes, uploading may take a while, so be patient.
Once everything uploads correctly, launch the previewer to check for any issues. If everything looks good, approve and exit the print previewer.
Finally, save your work and select all territories for distribution. Set your pricing based on market research to ensure competitive rates, then press "Publish."
Your notebook will enter the review process, which can take anywhere from a few hours to several days, so don't be alarmed if it takes longer than expected.
This process is simple and efficient, and I hope this guide has been helpful. If you encounter any issues, feel free to reach out. Enjoy your creative journey!
