# My Evolving Health and Fitness Journey: 20 Years of Learning

Chapter 1: Early Years and Initial Misconceptions
My passion for health and fitness spans over twenty years, and looking back, it's astonishing how my perspective has transformed throughout this time. Here’s a brief overview of my journey from my teenage years to my late thirties, with valuable lessons learned towards the conclusion.
At age 19, I was a thin and weak individual yearning for a more muscular physique. I assumed that working out with friends would get me ripped. My belief was that being fit automatically meant being healthy.
By 20, I started seeing progress in the gym and celebrated my gains. I became convinced that protein was essential for maximizing my results, so I turned to Wendy’s Jr. Bacon Cheeseburgers, thinking they were a good source of protein.
At 24, I had gained some muscle but also a bit of extra weight. I realized that if I wanted to improve my appearance, shedding some pounds would be necessary.
At 25, I discovered the importance of calories in weight loss. I successfully dropped 30 pounds and learned that the concept of "lean muscle" was misleading; getting lean and gaining muscle are two distinct goals that become challenging to achieve simultaneously after the initial gains.
By 27, I embraced intermittent fasting, which allowed me to maintain a leaner physique while indulging in my favorite foods like the Olive Garden's Never Ending Pasta Bowl and Red Lobster's Endless Shrimp.
At 29, with the rise of the Paleo diet, I became convinced that low-carb was the best approach for everyone. I started tracking my carbohydrate intake using MyFitnessPal, still dedicated to lifting after a decade.
At age 30, I delved deeply into calorie counting and became engrossed in the concept of IIFYM (If It Fits Your Macros).
After getting married at 31, I enjoyed numerous vacations and let my discipline slip a bit, but not as severely as before. I began to realize that incorporating more fruits and vegetables could benefit my health.
By 32, I regained control and focused on eating more fruits and veggies, a change that may have positively impacted my health. Blood tests? I used to think those were for older adults.
At 33, I underwent comprehensive blood work for the first time, learning about key health markers like triglycerides and A1c.
Turning 34, I discovered that my cholesterol and blood sugar levels needed attention. This prompted me to take my health more seriously and start tracking my steps.
At 36, I faced the loss of my father to a heart attack, while also becoming a father myself. These significant life events shifted my perspective on health from a mere interest to a critical necessity. I began monitoring my sleep using an Oura Ring.
At 37, I hired a personal trainer and became increasingly focused on longevity and optimizing my biological markers through lifestyle changes. I learned about the significance of heart rate variability and zone 2 cardio.
At 38, I enlisted the help of a health coach (@zaidkdahhaj), which opened my eyes to the complexity and holistic nature of health. I started paying more attention to factors like food quality, hydration, sleep hygiene, light exposure, supplementation, and environmental toxins. My blood test results improved significantly.
At 39, I focused on solidifying the habits I had developed. My awareness of health and positive outlook reached new heights, but I recognized the importance of avoiding complacency. I continued lifting, celebrating two decades in the gym.
As I approach 40 and beyond, the journey remains ongoing. The more I learn, the more questions arise. One thing I am certain of is that I will dedicate myself to this path for the rest of my life.
If there's one takeaway from my experiences, it's this:
When it comes to your health, it's perfectly acceptable to pursue it with passion.
Never cease learning.
Never stop improving.
And don't hesitate to seek assistance.
